July Update: Charter Challenge for Fair Voting

At the time of writing, 426 Canadians have donated $42,998 to bring this case to court!

Where we're at

When we began calling in pledges, we had received over $140,000 in pledges, including $57,000 designated for the first two fundraising stages, which we were asking all pledgers to contribute in June (the $140K pledged covers pledges for all stages of the case).

The amount we’ve collected to date is over three-quarters of the total amount pledged for this stage of the process, and just over half the goal we set for this stage. Obviously, we’d hoped to be closer to that fundraising goal at this point, but we are encouraged by your support and remain committed to ensuring this case gets to court.

Here’s how we’ll move ahead:

- We’ll be reaching out to like-minded organizations and electoral reform allies across Canada to request their support and to encourage their members and networks to support the case.

- We’re exploring options that will reduce the overall costs of filing the case (e.g. finding experts willing to provide pro-bono testimony, etc.)

- We'll be continuing our efforts in social media and traditional media to get the word about the case to everyday Canadians who support electoral reform. If you haven't donated yet, you can make your tax-deductible donation here

Key Events in the Case:

- We're currently preparing our appeal (we filed our Notice of Appeal on Dec 29, 2023).

- Justice Ed Morgan issued his ruling on Nov 30, 2023 and unfortunately dismissed our application.

- The case was heard September 26-28, 2023 in the Ontario Superior Court.

- We received the government's affidavits in late Fall 2022.

- We served the government with our affidavit and evidence package in May 2021.

- We filed the case with the Ontario Superior Court in October 2019.

How you can help

The main way you can help is to support the case financially. We are now raising $25,000 to support the second stage of our appeal process. You can support the case for as little as a dollar a month.

What to expect

At each step, we set a donation goal based on our estimate of the costs for the next stage of the process, and invite our supporters to contribute towards that goal to ensure the case can continue to move forward.
